Beginner Monk Questions
I'm fairly new to the game, up to about halfway through the PVE section with a few different characters (Me/E, Mo/N & R/W) and wanting to get my feet wet in the PVP side.
I've played a trapper ranger in the Zaishen challenges but that's kinda boring and too easy and I've since moved on to Random Arenas (have unlocked Team but never really got into an effective team yet - probably my skill level doesn't help!)
I want to play a Monk since I like the idea of keeping everyone alive to fight. However, as I'm not nearly through the whole game yet I have a lot of skills to unlock yet which doesn't help my building ability. I'm about at the stage where I can keep other people alive but as soon as I'm the target I run into all kinds of trouble.
So basically, umm... help?
How can I save myself when I become the target? What skills/skill combinations will help me out? I've been sinking most of my points into Divine Favor and Healing Prayers so far.
Thanks

Try checking out the search button.
Check out the monk builds in this thread to get some starters. Play around with them in Random Arena, then post back and see how you did.

For PvP, most monks choose to go as boon protect monks. This means putting attributes in protective prayers and divine favor, and using cheap prot spells (reversal of fortune, guardian, mend ailment/condition etc.) along with the sill divine boon. Secondary profession is often used for energy management (mesmer secondary using energy drain or mantra of recall is the most common atm).
Just take a look in monk and pvp forum and I'm sure you'll find a ton of builds.

Thanks for the replies art_, wheel and ap47. I did try searching beforehand but didn't really find too much I found useful - maybe I'm just not searching on the right terms. I'll read through the links you've provided and try running a "boon protect" monk for now =) I'll post back here once I see how well I'm doing (may not be until next week as I'm away for a while).
Also, art_ - I tried the video link you sent me too but it won't play with video through either WinAmp or Windows Media Player. Is there another way I should be watching it? Thanks!

You need to install the DivX video codec. Either that, or you could download VLC Media Player - no external codecs required for this player to play anything and everything.

Check out this vid. Go Mo/Me. Take e drain instead of OoB. This build is one mod of the highly-successful RA build known as the 'boon-prot'
For GvG/HA there are specific builds for different monks, although boon prots are also quite common in gvg. Im too lazy to write them out. I'm sure someone else will

You can still use OoB if you are intelligent about using it, and since he doesn't have a lot of elites already unlocked, modifying the Fi Boon template into an OoB boon prot is one of the easiest ways to get faction in RA.
Basic Fi Boon Mod:
Keep Boon and OoB. You can also keep Remove Hex if you don't have much hex removal unlocked. Take Reversal of Fortune, Mend Ailment, Guardian, maybe Protective Spirit or Signet of Devotion. If you have them, take Contemplation of Purity and Holy Veil and ditch Remove Hex. If you don't have them, keep RH and take Shielding Hands or maybe Smite Hex if you have it instead. You'll be able to unlock CoP and Veil pretty quickly with the faction gains in RA.
Put at least 10 in blood, max out Divine Favor and dump all the rest into Protection. If you don't have Superior Divine unlocked yet, don't fret about it. Make do with the runes you do have. Same for staff mods. When I use OoB though, I like to take the 20% recharge blood wand and the 20/20 blood offhand as my primary set. You might be happier taking the 20/20 blood staff.
Using OoB with a 20% sac: Never, ever OoB when you are the target. That's suicidal and you'll deserve the death you get from it. If you are the target, focus swap to a higher energy set, prot yourself, run like hell and OoB when you get the chance. I can honestly say I have never killed myself with the new, higher OoB sac. It's all about playing smarter.
Using the Fi Boon template, you can quickly unlock all the monk runes you don't have yet and the staff mods and skills that are most useful to PvP monking.
